Innovative Bearing Solution for Cranes

Background

Cranes operating in tough outdoor environments require durable and reliable components. However, a major challenge in crane design is ensuring that bearings can endure harsh conditions while remaining easy to maintain. As a result, HAWC Bearings was tasked with developing a new bearing solution for cranes to replace standard spherical bearings used in crane pivot points, such as jib pivots and hydraulic cylinder eyes.

The Challenge

Traditional crane bearings often face issues like cold welding and seizing, especially in high-load applications where pins pass through the bearing. Consequently, these problems make disassembly difficult, often requiring destructive removal methods that damage the crane structure. Therefore, the objective was to create a bearing that would:

  • Provide superior corrosion and wear resistance
  • Reduce friction and enhance durability
  • Prevent cold welding and pin seizing
  • Allow for easy installation and maintenance

The Solution

To address these challenges, HAWC Bearings engineered custom bearings made from a high-chromium content alloy. Notably, this alloy provided excellent corrosion and wear resistance without the disadvantages of stainless steel. In addition, the bearings featured advanced Floating/Glide technology, which significantly reduced friction and extended their service life.

Furthermore, to ensure easy installation and maintenance, the design was made compatible with existing crane structures, using circlips and fixed pins. By preventing pin seizure, these bearings eliminated the need for destructive removal methods, thereby reducing downtime and enhancing maintenance efficiency.

As a result of these innovations, the new bearings led to improved crane performance and easier maintenance. Specifically, key benefits included:
